It’s a Melton Center Youth Spotlight Saturday! We are excited to spotlight Lizzie Guan, a senior at West Chester East High School who has been invaluable to our New Directions Program. Last year, Lizzie formed a team of West Chester East students to raise money for our New Directions Summer STEAM Camp as part of her DECA project. She was passionate about expanding opportunities for all students to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. With Lizzie leading the way, her team met their goal and raised $5,000 for the Melton Center! When we found out we would have to move the camp to a virtual format, “Labcoat Lizzie” jumped into action again. She and her classmates led the way to develop a virtual STEAM Camp that was creative, educational, fun, and inspiring. Thanks to Lizzie and her team’s leadership, we had the funding to provide campers with weekly packages of art and educational supplies to use for hands-on discovery at home.
Through it all, Lizzie has been a dedicated New Directions coach and mentor. She is now doing 1:1 tutoring on Zoom, leading “Fall Fun” activities on the weekends, and organizing a backpack and school supply drive for our students. With her own senior year interrupted due to the pandemic, we have never once heard Lizzie complain. She always stays positive and finds ways to help others. After she graduates, Lizzie hopes to go to college and pursue a career in business and marketing that will allow her to use her creativity to make a difference in the community. Lizzie, you are an outstanding young leader who inspires everyone around you. All of us at the Melton Center are so grateful for you, and we can’t wait to see how you will continue to change the world!
